'Not going to be easy': Task force to make final recommendations on Louisiana's budget issues by end of month

The panel of experts who have been tasked with coming up with recommendations for how Louisiana might fix its long-standing budget issues is entering the final stretch.

By the end of the month, the Task Force on Structural Changes in Budget and Tax Policy will have a final report to hand off to state lawmakers, who then will have about six months to mull the proposals before the 2017 legislative session kicks off.

The report, due by Sept. 30 after a 30-day extension, is expected to offer up recommendations that would overhaul Louisiana's sales tax, as well as the state's individual and corporate income tax policies.

A few things they are planning to zero in on specifically include broadening the state sales tax base by removing some exemptions and possibly applying it to some services, capping the state's federal income tax deduction and reducing some tax credits for businesses.
