In 1996, LePage was hired to run Marden’s, the discount retail chain. In 2002, Efficiency Maine was created by the Legislature, “for the purposes of developing, planning, coordinating and implementing energy efficiency and alternative energy resources programs in the State” (35-A MRSA §10103.1.). LePage has a long history of opposing efforts to reduce consumption; just last month LePage told Mal Leary that, “Conservation is just another word for a Ponzi scheme in many respects.”

So it’s of interest that while LePage was running Marden’s, that company received over $168,000 from Efficiency Maine to help pay for renovations to some its stores. Over a six year period beginning in 2004, the LePage applied for and received money that was used to replace lighting fixtures and other schemes to allow Marden’s to save up to three times more in savings from reduce energy usage.

Using energy efficiently is a good thing, not only for a business’ bottom line but the environment as a whole. The Governor’s disparaging remarks about conservation while taking taxpayer money to do so is simply disingenuous.

It seems he was the ideal person corporations were looking for! one who's only loyalty is to the dollar. one who will screw his fellow man to increase his pay check!

Well I'm all for cutting welfare! especially corporate welfare! we know of $168,000 that went to benifit marden's; but how many more thousands or millions went to other companies? how many people had to sleep on the street,go hungary,lose a love one for lack of funds? yea like all true repukes they talk the talk but they fail the walk!
thats why I'm no longer a republican!(but not the only dirty deed I know of!)
cut the corporate welfare in maine!
