Jay Gonzalez, Democratic candidate for governor, calls State Police's attempts to destroy records 'cover-ups'
Jay Gonzalez, the Democrat hoping to oust Republican Gov. Charlie Baker in November, seized on the State Police's effort to destroy payroll records while an audit and ongoing state and federal criminal investigations are underway, saying that amounted to "attempted cover-ups."
Gonzalez, who has previously said the governor is not going far enough to root out corruption within the troubled law enforcement agency, called for the state inspector general to step in and review the State Police request to a state board to destroy the records.
"We need to get to the bottom of who was trying to destroy these records while criminal investigations and audits were going on," Gonzalez told reporters outside the State House.
"I mean, this takes this scandal to a whole different level because it's not only a scandal and criminal activity and fraud that's happening at the State Police, and a total management failure, it is pro-active attempts to cover it up," Gonzalez added.
