Coronavirus in Mississippi: 2,326 new cases, 24 deaths reported Thursday
The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 2,326 new cases of the coronavirus and 24 deaths on Thursday.
On Wednesday the state surpassed 200,000 cases of COVID-19 since the virus hit Mississippi in March. On Tuesday, the state reported a record 79 deaths. The state's one-day record of new cases, 2,746, was set on Dec. 9.
On five days last week new COVID-19 infections topped 2,000, a mark that had not been surpassed during the pandemic until earlier this month. The state is now averaging more than 2,100 new cases per day over the past week.
To date, the state has reported a total of 202,651 cases and 4,556 deaths. Almost 15,000 new cases came in last week alone. Meanwhile, the number of Mississippians hospitalized with an infection, in an intensive care unit and on ventilators have all surged in recent weeks.
