State House passes bill requiring use of seat belts

JACKSON – All passengers, both those in the front seat and back seat, would have to wear seat belts under legislation that passed the Mississippi House Monday afternoon by an 88-29 margin.

Rep. Steve Massengill, R-Hickory Flat, amended a Senate bill that would have required those under age 18 who are backseat passengers to wear seat belts instead to require all passengers, regardless of age, to do so.

Current law states that occupants of the front seat, both the driver and passenger, must wear seat belts.

The bill now goes back to the Senate, unless a House member tries to hold it on a motion to reconsider today – essentially requiring another vote. When it goes back to the Senate, members can accept the House changes and send it to Gov Phil Bryant or invite negotiations on the differences.
