This can't be happening the first week of the legislative session
The first week of the 2018 legislative session is in the books and some veteran observers — as well as some lawmakers — were left wondering what’s going on with votes in the House on bills the first week.
I had been telling people, based upon prior legislative sessions, that rarely does anything newsworthy happen the first week or two of the legislative session. But to my surprise, the first week of this session the House sent three or four bills to committees that convened and approved them.
Iit appears the push was by House leadership to have action on the bills before the Mississippi Economic Council Day at the Capitol, which was Thursday.
Some lawmakers, and even lobbyists, didn't seem to be expecting bills to be sent to committees so soon, with the deadline to file general bills and constitutional amendments not until Jan. 15.
