Amid efforts to repeal North Dakota's blue laws, opinion divided on all-day Sunday shopping

Andy Schneider said his family doesn't open Dakota TV and Appliance in Grand Forks on Sunday because the local store wants its employees to have a guaranteed day off to spend with family.

"Some family time is always nice. There's a bigger picture outside of just sales every day," the store's vice president said of his family's business. "Guys come back and they are refreshed. It helps with the burnout factor."

The home appliance and television store is one of several businesses in Grand Forks that keep their stores closed on Sundays, though there is a good portion of businesses that open their doors to customers.

If a store does open in North Dakota on Sunday, state law bans it from opening before noon if it sells certain items: clothing, household items, appliances, hardware, toys etc. The law lists which businesses and activities—restaurants, hospitals, food stores, sporting events and more—are allowed on Sunday.
