(35,772 posts)The Democratic National Convention is being held after the deadline to get on the ballot in Ohio. It's been a common practice in both parties, but the GQP has decided to weaponize it this year, so instead of granting a stay as they usually do, they aren't this time. So the Democrats will hold a virtual convention ahead of the in-person one to ensure that Biden is on the ballot.

(54,151 posts)2009: Ohio passes stupid law requiring 90-day lead time before the election to get on the ballot.
2012: Ohio makes a one-time extension to 60 days before the election because *both* parties need an extention based on the date of their conventions.
2016: both parties nominate early enough so it's not a problem
2020: again, Ohio makes a one-time extension to 60 days before the election because, once again, *both* parties need an extention based on the date of their conventions.
2024: for the first time, the problem affects only one party as the republicans will nominate before the deadline but the Democratic convention is after the deadline. So republicans being republicans, they refuse to agree to any extension.
So it looks like the dnc will have a virtual nominating session ahead of the deadline in order to comply.
