Six golden bottles are hidden in Oregon treasure hunt to mark 50th year of Bottle Bill

Oregon is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Bottle Bill with simultaneous treasure hunts across the state — all in search of six golden bottles hidden at different locations.

Participants in the Hidden Bottle Hunt will scour six regions across the state from July 7-11 for the gold-painted bottles. The reward for finding one: a $500 donation to their choice of nonprofit.

The event is being put on by the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative, the beverage industry-created cooperative, which is the operator of container redemption.

The Bottle Bill was enacted in 1971 and took effect the next year. The current law has people pay a 10-cent container deposit when they buy beverage containers 3 liters or less in size, with some exceptions. They then can return the empty containers to redemption centers get the 10-cent refund value for each container returned.
