Raimondo To Testify At Senate Finance Hearing For College Tuition Plan

Gov. Gina Raimondo is expected to testify before the Senate Finance Committee Thursday in support of her college tuition plan. The rare appearance comes after a cool response to the proposal from some state lawmakers, including House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello.

Although popular with high school and college students, some lawmakers argue the money might be better spent on K-12 education. Others say they are concerned beneficiaries of the Rhode Island Promise Scholarship might leave the state after graduating.

Raimondo’s proposal would allow two years of free tuition to Rhode Island High School students in good academic standing to state schools. The plan includes the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and CCRI.
