Ex-Warwick lawyer sentenced to serve 8 years for embezzling $1.3 million from clients

PROVIDENCE -- A Superior Court magistrate sentenced a former Warwick lawyer to serve eight years in prison for embezzling $1.3 million from clients.

Vincent J. Mitchell, 58, of Coventry, admitted Thursday to one count of embezzlement over $100. Magistrate Patrick T. Burke sentenced Mitchell to 20 years, with eight to serve, and remaining time suspended with probation. He was ordered to pay restitution of $1.3 million.

Mitchell in 2017 consented to disbarment after self-reporting to state disciplinary counsel that he had stolen $1.2 million from clients.

Mitchell, whose practice was at 303 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick, reported to Supreme Court Chief Disciplinary Counsel David D. Curtin that he took a total of $1,207,233 from 10 clients to fuel gambling and drug addictions, Curtin said at the time.
