Sunrise climate activists gathering in R.I. for training sessions, demonstration

PROVIDENCE — Hundreds of climate activists from around the Northeast are expected in Providence this weekend for a regional summit of Sunrise, the youth-led movement that gained a national profile for its support of the Green New Deal.

The meeting, one of four being organized across the United States, will take place at Rhode Island College on Saturday and Sunday, and will culminate on Monday with a rally that is set to start at 9 a.m. in Burnside Park, continue into the afternoon, and, according to organizers, include an act of civil disobedience.

The demonstrators, whom Sunrise expects to number 500 or more, will push for state action in Rhode Island to address climate change.

“We want to see concrete plans for reaching net-zero emissions by 2050,” said Liam Hopkins, a spokesman for the Rhode Island chapter of Sunrise.
