Fewer Rhode Island candidates missing campaign finance deadlines, board says

Rhode Island political candidates missed campaign finance reporting deadlines at less than half the rate they did three years ago, the state Board of Elections said Tuesday.

In the first six months of this year, candidates filed late or failed to file 283 reports, or 11.2%, the lowest number of late reports over a half year since the start of 2016.

“I think we have really turned the corner on getting greater compliance,” Richard Thornton, the Board of Elections’ director of finance, told the board Tuesday.

In the the first half of 2016, candidates blew their reporting deadlines 417 times, a 22.5% clip that continued in the second half of that year.
