Shunned by their party, Democratic Women's Caucus votes to go it alone

PROVIDENCE — And just like that, the Rhode Island Democratic Party’s Women’s Caucus filed for divorce.

By Tuesday morning, the women-in-white shouting “shame, shame, shame” at Democratic Party leaders the night before had given their caucus a new Twitter handle, a new logo and a new name: the R.I. Democratic Women’s Caucus. (Note the absence of the word “party.”)

Faced with an unstoppable move to clip their wings with new rules banning them from endorsing candidates, spending money, or making statements — as a group — without the party chairman’s approval, they actually voted to split a week earlier, but kept the decision quiet.

“It was going to happen no matter what,” the chairwoman, former South Kingstown Councilwoman Liz Gledhill, said Tuesday.
