Sanders announces State of the Union essay contest

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders is inviting Vermont high school students to write about issues of national importance for his annual State of the Union essay contest.

Contestants write 250-500-word essays to coincide with the president's "State of the Union" speech in January.

Sanders, an independent, says it's a way for students to think about solutions to the country's challenges. He says "they are the future of our country, and they must be involved in discussions about where our nation needs to go."

A volunteer panel of Vermont teachers will judge the essays.
