CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The trial of Jacob Dix has ended in a mistrial. After almost 12 hours of deliberation, the jury was at a deadlock, with eight voting not guilty, three voting guilty and one undecided.

Dix had been charged with burning an object with the intent to intimidate for his involvement at the 2017 torch march the night before the deadly Unite the Right rally.

The prosecution argued that if Dix was part of a group and someone in that group broke the law, he must be convicted.

The defense argued that Dix was to be judged on his actions alone, and saying "You will not replace us" was protected under the First Amendment.

I hate these one sentence paragraphs that seem to be the norm for TV journalists. 1. Some print stories do it, too. It's a way to thwart the fair usage ruling.

One solution is take the facts and rewrite the article in an original manner and credit the sources of the facts. Facts are public domain. Wording is copyrighted. Quote and credit information or direct opinions that comes only from the source.

2. I recall overhearing a new graduate in journalism saying ..

"I gotta get the story, run the camera, and edit the video. Now they want me to write a text story, that's not why I studied TV journalism."

They just publish their script or sum times I um think they use a voice to text apple cation.
The above is an exaggerated example of what I've seen on the local TV from an intern.

3. My thought is with a fair 'fair use' a publication would get more potential readers. But what do I know? ...

4. Still kicking

Some days are middling and some pretty good. We moved into a new home in late January. Very comfortable but lots needs doing and I'm no longer a fast worker. In other words I have a ton of get around to its.
