Challenger leads business-backed incumbent in Seattle council race

The Seattle City Council's moderate majority was dented Tuesday after the first count of ballots showed incumbent Tanya Woo trailed challenger Alexis Mercedes Rinck by 15 percentage points.

While thousands of ballots remain to be counted, it seems unlikely Woo will close the gap in the special election race for the citywide council seat.

Woo, with backing by business interests, was appointed to the council in January after Teresa Mosqueda stepped down from the District 8 position to take the King County County Council post she won.

Rinck ran on exploring new revenue options, including a local capital gains tax, high payroll tax and real estate transfer tax.
