Local election offices not using absentee ballot dropboxes

BELOIT — Don’t expect any histrionics over absentee ballot drop boxes in the Beloit region. Local election offices don’t plan on using them.

In Wausau, an absentee ballot drop box was removed by the mayor a week ago, but it was back in place on Monday. Mayor Doug Diny removed the drop box on Sept. 22 without consulting with the clerk, who has the authority under a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling legalizing drop boxes to make one available. They are not mandatory in the state.

Sarah Lock, director of strategic communications for the City of Beloit, said the city will not have an absentee ballot drop box for the Nov. 5 election. Lock said the city did have one in the 2020 presidential election because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Due to the legal challenges we ceased using them after that and did extensive communication when we stopped using them,” Lock said in an email. “Since we did not use them for recent elections, we did not want to further confuse voters.”
