University of Wyoming president raises possibility of more staff cuts

CHEYENNE — The University of Wyoming may have to eliminate more faculty and staff positions if other planned budget cuts do not pan out as expected, UW President Laurie Nichols said Wednesday.

The state’s only public four-year university is slashing spending in order to account for the state cutting its support by more than $40 million over the next two years.

Last month, Nichols declared a financial crisis and detailed a plan that included five strategies to save $19.3 million during the new fiscal year that began on July 1.

However, Nichols told the UW Board of Trustees during a conference call on Wednesday that efforts to save about $2.5 million a year by having faculty spend more time teaching and another $3 million this year and $6 million next year by offering early retirement and separation may not meet original expectations.

BS and PhD.

It used to be a great university. But it's a state-run institution, subject to the whims of a RW-held state congress.

2. My nephew also has a BS and PhD from UW.

He is working for the state and I suspect that he has moved up in seniority to the point that he wouldn't be vulnerable to the budget cuts in the state.

I suspect that my BIL is in a more vulnerable position in the mining sector though since he is in his early sixties. However, if something did happen to his job he should have enough economic resources to get by since he was well paid, inherited a nice sum when his mother passed and he was also extremely frugal (as in driving a 30 year-old vehicle) plus my sister also worked enough that she could cover her own expenses.
