iPhone 12 sending outgoing emails to it's own trash can

Got a new phone for Christmas and didn’t transfer my old phone to it. I had forgotten how tedious starting a new Apple ID and phone from scratch is! Downloading apps, all the “helpful” set up instruction pop ups in every app, remembering passwords for YT and whatnot. It’s been fun. First world problem, for sure.

Anyhoo, I tried to send an email with photo attachments to my own gmail address. This the first time I’ve tried to send email from the new phone. I do not have the gmail account linked in the new phone’s Mail app yet, so it should have just sent like a regular old email. My gmail (it’s on my iPad) did not receive the emails. Multiple attempts were made. Also tried sending it to my other, old Apple email, the one linked to the iPad. Same problem.

After some poking around, I found them in the trash can of the new phone’s email address. The sender’s trash can, not the receiver. Wth?

I tried googling/troubleshooting the issue but couldn’t find anything helpful. Any ideas?

I’m confident the solution is easier than traveling by Southwest, voting in Florida or reading the New York Times.
