Canonical shuts down Ubuntu One cloud service
http://www.humanipo.com/news/42348/canonical-shuts-down-ubuntu-one-cloud-service/Open source software developer Canonical has announced to its users it will be shutting down its cloud service Ubuntu One to focus resources on other areas of the business.
The free storage wars arent a sustainable place for us to be, particularly with other services now regularly offering 25GB-50GB free storage. If we offer a service, we want it to compete on a global scale, and for Ubuntu One to continue to do that would require more investment than we are willing to make, said Canonical chief executive officer (CEO) Jane Silber.
We choose instead to invest in making the absolute best, open platform and to highlight the best of our partners services and content.
The company said its services would officially shut down as of June 1, 2014, however users will be able to access their files until July 31, 2014, at which point personal content will be deleted.

That's a shame; I liked its interface.

(13,610 posts)1. I actually think it's a good move.
But then I'm the guy who sees the holes in cloud services in general and I think the future of cloud computing will not be our friend. It will become another way to keep people chained to a system and it will evolve in that direction as time goes on. It's not that hard to set your own cloud anyway if it's necessary. I set up one, never used it much, took it down. OpenCloud. It was an interesting build.

totally agree with you.
folks are parking all sorts of files into the cloud, with no security parameters.
