President Obama will slip out of Washington on Friday afternoon for his annual Marthas Vineyard vacation, just in time for the political spotlight to swing firmly away from the White House and toward the 2016 presidential campaign after the first Republican debate on Thursday night.
But after two weeks of cool island breezes and leisurely rounds of golf, Mr. Obama is expected to return to the capital and to the spotlight with a vengeance, pushing for congressional approval of the Iran nuclear deal, seeking a global climate change accord and working to wrap up an agreement on trade with Pacific Rim nations.
The president also faces the growing likelihood of another budget showdown with Congress, and aides say he may try again to build support for investment in the nations crumbling infrastructure.
In late September alone, Mr. Obama will be dealing with the Iran vote in Congress, a historic visit to Washington by Pope Francis, a separate state visit by President Xi Jinping of China and a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
After some downtime with his family, the president is looking forward to a fall schedule that is shaping up to be a blockbuster as several high-priority issues come to a head, seemingly at the same time, said Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary....
