http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/02/13/study-religious-people-more-likely-to-think-theyre-prn-addicts/ even after viewing Internet porn just once.
Researchers at Case Western Reserve University examined the link between perceptions of addiction to online pornography and religious beliefs in a study that was published Wednesday in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior.
We were surprised that the amount of viewing did not impact the perception of addiction, but strong moral beliefs did, said Joshua Grubbs, a doctoral student and lead author of the study.

However, another study published this month found little evidence
such an addiction exists.
Researchers at New Mexico Solutions, a behavioral health program in Albuquerque, said no evidence connected pornography use to erectile dysfunction or changes in the brain.

(80,708 posts)We put forth three reasons. One is that it is an easy answer. It is an easy answer and an easy scapegoat in a society and a media that applies the concept of addiction to any overuse of anything. Secondly, it is a cultural control of sexuality, and particularly the forms of sexuality that are now widely available and difficult to control due to modern technology. There is the old saying dont give away the milk away for free because nobody will buy the cow as a way of controlling sexuality. Well, porn, and Internet porn in particular, doesnt just give away milk, it puts it in a high-speed faucet right in your room. That is concerning to society, to people in relationships, because it represents a significant loss of control of sexual expression and experience. Lastly, and this is one of the ones that is gonna be controversial, there is a large, lucrative industry that experiences tremendous secondary gain from the promulgation of this concept. As part of this paper we had a grad student call porn addiction facilities around the country and get an idea of the cost and the costs were extraordinary. The average was $675 a day. These facilities were recommending or requiring stays anywhere between 15 and 90 days. Insurance doesnt pay for this; it is cash only. The other thing that is really troubling is that there is no data to show that these very expensive programs generate positive results. There is an industry and unfortunately I count the media in that as well, because the media makes lots and lots of hay by touting the issue of porn addiction, and even by raising the controversy of is it real or not? There is a lot of money to be made in keeping this thing alive.

(36,900 posts)This pretty much says it all.
We would be a lot better off if there was an expectation that people who try to control sexuality had the burden of proving their claims whether it's jacking off makes you go blind or teh menz watching porn hurts women. Instead you have people like Reisman who get a pass for nutty shit like erotoxins and college dropouts can come up with ideas about sexual objectification causes rape with zero proof and people believe it because it's what they want to hear. So then we spend countless millions having to disprove things that were never proven to begin with.

Course, I've been watching porn to varying levels since I was about 13 and secretly watched the tapes my father was renting.

(26,582 posts)I rented it a few weekends ago and thought it was pretty good. It has Joseph Gordon-Levitt (wrote & directed), Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore in it. Also Tony Danza is Jon's dad.

(36,900 posts)I really like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Julianne Moore and it will be interesting to see how Gordon-Levitt performs in a writting and directing role. The subject matter seems provocative, but I read the synopsis of the plot and it seems to be the same as practically every romantic film which is an imperfect guy that needs to be fixed by a perfect woman.

(36,900 posts)I probably should have specificed modern romantic films, and certainly not all or even most, but it's quite common or at the very least it's been done enough to where it's just too predictable.

I watched a good documentary last weekend, The Armstrong Lie. If you're at all interested in cycling, Lance Armstrong, etc. I'd recommend it.

(36,900 posts)I lost a lot of faith in Armstrong over the whole deal and just don't really like to hear about it much anymore. For the longest time I believed him and it was easy enough to believe because the Europeans always had a hard on against the US invasion of the Tour de France (perhaps with good reason). I look at it in much the same way as I look at A-Rod and others who took PEDs. It doesn't matter if others were doing it. They still betrayed the sport.

(26,582 posts)This was interesting, because the guy was filming Lance during his 2009 comeback. The. After he finally admitted to it, interviewed him again. Back in 2009 he interviewed Dr. Ferrari too. The guy that did it did the movie Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. It's well done, interviews a lot of people and I found it to be an honest take on everything.

(36,900 posts)The European teams were constantly going from one tour to the next. Lance's team had the single focus of the Tour de France. The only reason they did other races at all was for preparation. There's a huge culture of road biking in Texas. Much of it is owed to Armstrong.
