Amazon union vote in Alabama could spur broader organizing efforts, labor rep says
A representative of the states largest union organization said Monday that a successful effort to unionize an Alabama Amazon warehouse could touch off a broader unionizing movement in the company's warehouses in Washington and across the U.S.
I think it very well could ... especially if they are able to negotiate a contract that makes them feel better about their jobs, said David Groves, the communications director for the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO.
Groves said Amazon.com Inc. warehouse workers in Washington have contacted his organization to discuss unionizing. None of the efforts have gotten as far as the vote in Alabama, he said.
Another possibility, Groves said, is that one unionized Amazon warehouse could negotiate workplace conditions that Amazon may be inclined to grant every warehouse across its supply chain in an effort to avoid further unionization efforts.
