On my 1040 it has the addition SR
Yes, tax return for seniors. Have no idea what the purpose of this, and cannot see the difference..

But it does say, on line 9, in bold: Standard deductions or itemized deductions (from Schedule A)
Oh, and it does have a Standard deductions chart at the bottom. Yes, they made it a "postcard size" which, I complained before, had tiny fonts... so now they increased the font and added the chart at the bottom.

(11,463 posts)and updated December 2019, and so maybe something changed that AARP didn't catch. I searched the comments for "deduction" (which catches "deductions" too) and one commenter in February 3, 2020 said it wasn't true that you can't have itemized deductions with this form. But there was no response.
I'm over 65 and itemize and use TurboTax...

(28,475 posts)when this happened to me last year, I thought there was some kind of glitch in the TurboTax program that was entering the incorrect amount.
I would assume the SR on the form is used, in part, for when the return is scanned & so the increase in the deduction isn't flagged. But that is just a guess.
