Missouri Senate passes bill funding charter schools without using public school money

A bill funding Missouri’s charter schools using state money awaits another House vote after members of the Senate passed it on Wednesday.

Senators voted 29-5, with the bill receiving broader bipartisan support compared to the House version, which earned few Democratic votes.

Under the bill House members passed by a vote of 85-67 more than a month ago, millions in public school funds from both Kansas City and St. Louis Public Schools would have been used to fix a so-called “glitch” in the funding formula to make up the difference in charter school funding.

Charter schools, which are independent schools that receive state funding, are for now only located in St. Louis and Kansas City. Currently, public schools receive more money per student than charter schools.

Do the charter schools provide all services that public schools do?

One supposed 'benefit' of charter schools was that charter schools would be more efficient.

Charter schools should only get equivalent money for equivalent services provided.

No gym? - No money.

No busing? No money.

2. Charter schools are a scam

At least here in NC, they do not have to provide transportation for students, and I don't think they even have to provide lunch.

Charters are a way for Republicans to "Defund the Schools" by re-directing money from public schools to charters. In theory, charters were supposed to be "laboratories" where they could experiment by trying different programs, and then they could be applied to public schools as well. But it seems that that never happens!

"School choice" is just another way to kill off public schools. Republicans don't think that states should spend any money education children. On the other hand, though, they seem fine with giving public money to charter schools and even to private schools.

3. "more money per student"??? makes it sound like public schools are swimming

in money, which weknow is not true. A sneaky way to undermine the validity of publuc education, versus scam charter schools. Nicely done, missouri.
