Amtrak refusing new Acela trains amid safety issues and delays




Amtrak has halted payment on its new fleet of Acela cars as the manufacturer has been unable to meet federal safety standards, according to a report released Tuesday by the federal railway’s inspector general.

The cars are the crown jewel of a $2.3 billion program to revamp the high-speed rail service from Washington, D.C., to Boston along the Northeast Corridor — making Amtrak’s proposed 2024 launch of the 160 mph “New Acela” unlikely, the railway’s inspector general said.

“[T]he program is more than three years behind schedule, and additional delays are likely,” the report reads.

French multinational train-building firm Alstom has already built 12 of 28 standard car sets, and another dozen cafe cars at its upstate Hornell, N.Y., factory — none of which Amtrak will formally accept. ..............(more)
