An Australian adventure tourist targeted in a deadly shooting in central Afghanistan thought he would die after coming face to face with an Islamic State gunman.

Joe McDowell, 38, was shot when the lone gunman opened fire on his tour group in Bamiyan, about 200km west of the capital Kabul, last Friday, killing six people.

Three Spanish travellers and three Afghans were killed and five others, including McDowell, were severely injured.

Islamic State has reportedly claimed responsibility.

You have to be an absolute lunatic, as a foreigner, to think that you’re safe vacationing in the home of the Taliboneheads.

Whoever organized this should be arrested, tried and shot for being stupid and/or a serious threat to public safety. Charges of being a con artist would just be gratuitous…
