COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP/WMBF) - A group of South Carolina lawmakers on Wednesday advanced a proposal to ban all abortions in the state should the U.S. Supreme Court overturn the nationwide right to the procedure.
Following the subcommittees vote, the full Senate Medical Affairs committee is now poised to consider that measure, along with a second bill requiring doctors to tell women receiving drug-induced abortions about a controversial method to possibly halt the abortion process.
The first proposal would define that life begins at fertilization and any doctor who performs an abortion after that point could face similar charges to murder. The bill also says birth control and other contraception methods would not be outlawed and abortions could be performed if a mothers life is in danger or an egg was fertilized outside the womb.
If passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature, the law would take effect if the U.S. Supreme Court were to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision that protected abortion rights across the country, and turn that decision over to states. About a dozen states already have similar laws.
The bills sponsors include Senators Lawrence Grooms, Daniel Verdin, Richard Cash and Rex Rice.

This is NOT about saving lives of the unborn. This is about CONTROL over women.

(2,636 posts)Life does not begin at fertilization. Plenty of fertilized eggs do not implant into the uterine lining. These men are not doctors. They're not obstetricians. If all fertilized eggs =- life, then why does it take five or six in vitro in the hopes that one might implant? Their own bible goes on at length about the breath of life. Until that doctor smacks the baby on the ass, it doesn't breath.
My mother delivered, after 38 hours of labor, a child who did not breath. Yet she carried to term.
Whether I grow life in my uterus or not is no one's business but my own. I had a near fatal heart attack at 24. These idiots would sentence me to death in the event I conceived. And they'd decide for me. And get between me and my cardiologist and my OB/gyn.
Old white men making laws they will never apply to themselves, projecting what they would do if they could get pregnant and terminate a pregnancy.
Roe allows the religious right to carry to term, while respecting my own autonomy. No one is forcing anyone to abort. Yet they'd force me to risk my life in the hopes I'd deliver a white male fetus.
Roe ended the practice of women dying from back alley and unclean abortions. The RIght seeks more dead women.
