Will Ikea do anything to hurt women in the name of profit?

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Gormy Cuss (a host of the Feminists group).

I'm the last to find out Ikea deletes all women out of ads for the Saudi Arabia market. Makes me nauseous, truly, and reaffirms for me that Islam is #1 in misogyny in the world, and some corporations will do their bidding.

Religious fundamentalism is often highly misogynistic. There's no reason to single out Islam. No problem with singling out Saudi Arabia. That country has a terrible women's rights records. Could you rephrase your OP to focus on Saudi Arabia? Thanks.

There have been earlier threads about it on DU. IKEA's move is abominable and I hold THEM responsible for misogyny by catering to the Saudi market.

Saudi Arabia may hide behind a veil of Islam but it's THEIR interpretation of the faith, not a universal truth of Islam.

But Islam is KING among misogynist religions. Don't tell me you think it was Ikea's idea to erase females from their ads when their ads are filled with women in non-Islamic countries. I'm sick of political correctness allowing misogyny to thrive.

IKEA had the choice to say "no thanks" to the Wahhabists and not distribute catalogs. Instead they bowed to one of the most repressive, misogynistic regimes in the modern world.

I point the finger of blame on IKEA and the Saudis, not all of Islam.

It's not about "political correctness," it's about attributing the blame where it belongs rather than making a broad brush smear against an entire faith. As a matter of fact, I see it as no different than broad brushed gender smears.
