Fred Rogers: "Won't You Be My Neighbor?"
Rotten Tomatoes: From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (Twenty Feet from Stardom), Won't You Be My Neighbor? takes an intimate look at America's favorite neighbor: Mister Fred Rogers. A portrait of a man whom we all think we know, this emotional and moving film takes us beyond the zip-up cardigans and the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.

(16,331 posts)Rather than start a new thread, I found yours and wanted to comment. I got the DVD from our library and watched it last night. I just loved this man, and my children grew up watching Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Now my three-year old granddaughter loves Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. I learned so much about Fred Rogers from this film, but the most surprising thing was that he was a lifelong Republican! It made me think about how in today's climate, he would probably never align himself with the GOP, though I could be wrong. Can't imagine what he would have to say about the shape of our country since at the end of his life it seems like he was already fairly depressed about the way things were going. It also made me think about my own reaction to today's GOP. I'm old enough to remember having friends who were Republican and it not being a big deal to me decades ago, but now I can't imagine having anyone in my inner circle who voted for Trump.
One of the things I didn't know from the movie was how the right wingers of recent denigrated Fred Rogers and his show. I am not surprised by it, but I found myself thinking, wow, they'll find something wrong with anyone who is kind and accepting of everyone. How sad is that!
We need to be careful in lumping Republicans together in one group. Many are simply (IMO) voting to support their group morals or out of long-time routine and comfort.
The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt is an excellent book that examines why people vote and practice religion as they do. I've read it twice and highly recommend it.
The right-wingers who degenerate Rogers and others are marching to a different agenda IMO. The Limbaughs, Hannitys, Trumps, etc. of the world are creating conflict and hate in order to enrich/empower themselves and/or promote their very evil ideologies. I agree that Rogers would find the current state of affairs most distastful.
