I had a relative who died four years ago from opioid addiction.

She was supposed to go to intensive outpatient treatment but didn’t go.

IMHO A person would have to be highly motivated to go to intensive outpatient. When you’re just sitting at home, it’s easier to just stay there And drink or use than it is to get up the motivation to go out and do something.

(Yeah, I know inpatient is much more expensive.)

of inpatient therapy for addiction. I saw around a dozen attempts of outpatient therapy in my 90 day stay, and can say that none of them were successful.

That said, in AA, I have met people who have decades of sobriety having never spent a moment in a rehab. They insist that it was their desire to quit bolstered by a strong support network (sponsors, calling sober friends, service to other addicts) that got them through.

In the grand scheme of things, it is up to the addict when they have had enough, and up to the addict to stay sober. There isn't much you could have done, and I know from experience of trulying to help others get sober, only to see them dead after a few months too. My condolences on your loss, and I do hope that you find peace.
