To anyone new to recovery: It really does get better.

I know it sounds cliche and I didn't believe it at first either. But it's true. It's never easy, but over time, it does get better. I've been sober for around two years. My family did an intervention and I went into rehab. At first it was real hard.

My typical evening was, I'd pound down a couple of high alcohol beers before dinner. Then I'd drink wine while cooking. Wine with dinner. And some more wine after dinner. I'd usually get tired and fall asleep around 9:30 or 10 and go up to bed. It was every night. Sure I do miss it sometimes. I think it would be nice to have a couple glasses of wine and feel that warm buzz. But I now know that it would never be just a couple glasses of wine. And I'd be back where I was in no time.

My weekends are tough sometimes. I get this notion that, well, my wife is drinking on a Friday or Saturday night and I can't. They made me quit. I'll show them. I'll go to bed early. The heck with it. But then I think, sure, cut off your nose to spite your face. What will that accomplish? Just a waste of an evening. So I'll grab a big mug of ice cream, and watch some movie on Netflix. And in the morning, I'm glad that I didn't bail early.

But weekends seem to be getting better. So hang in there! If I can do it, you can too!
