When I was first diagnosed with prostate cancer, my outlook on my future appeared grim at best. This diagnosis came out of nowhere. I had been getting regular checkups since the A.C.A. was passed. I felt fine and had a clean bill of health year after year. I trace that back to the challenges of my job which as a baker are both mental and physical. I will turn 57 in a couple of weeks and retirement was in my sights.
I expected health problems as I got older but being estranged by my father since my 20's, I had little knowledge nor access to any knowledge of any health issues that may be genetic. My brother who was in contact with my father, knew of Dads prostate cancer and eventual removal yet did not tell me anything about it until I was diagnosed. I might have been screened earlier or more often given this knowledge. My father passed away in May of this year. I did not attend his funeral.
Fast forward to today, my outlook has changed dramatically. My oncology team is in place and I have received 15 of 28 radiation treatments. I am just over half way there and I am still working. I am a musician who has hosted open mic night since 2015 and have introduced hundreds of fellow musicians and made many friends over that time. The musical community has set up a gofund me, one of them is tye dying and. selling t-shirts and a band that began their foray into live performance at the open mic is holding a benefit concert for me. That is a lot of positive energy being sent my way.
The copy of Tom Sawyer given to George Baily had an inscription about friendship. I have learned from experience that when you give love, you get love. This bell rings true today. I have had his moment and it has been and will be a wonderful life.
