Does anyone have access to Fold3? Need a look-up of possible WWII vet for memorial dedication.

Hi all.

I haven't posted in ages. Haven't done much genealogy work since my parents passed away. Not fun without them here to share
all the fun things I would find.

Anyway, I am in need of help. I live in an over-55 community, and they are building a memorial for veterans. Both of my parents were vets, so I already have their info. But my Dad's best friend, who has also passed away, may have been a veteran. I can't remember. On Ancestry.com, all I can find is his draft card. Nothing else.

If anyone has access to Fold3, could you please check and see if this person ever served in the military? I only have until September 30th to get his name in, IF he was a veteran.

Here is the info I have on him

Ulrich Lawrence Monroe (his friends knew him as Larry)
b 22 Oct 1912, in Brookfield, Missouri, USA
d 11 Oct 2006, Escondido, San Diego, CA, USA

I am kind of doubting that he served, as he was in the fire department from a pretty young age, and retired as Battalion Chief.
But I want to make sure. I don't want him to not be honored with the vets, if he was one.

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can try to do a look-up for me.

I really appreciate your checking to see if there was any further info. I now believe that he did not serve in the
military, but was a full-time fire fighter.

Again, much thanks!

No other city directory listings during the war years on Ancestry.com
He likely was given a deferral due to his civilian occupation - necessary for the homefront.

I had no idea that there could be such things as deferrals due to occupation.
But it makes total sense. I ran across one newspaper article after another with his name
in them, all in Long Beach, CA, where he lived and worked until retirement.
All of the articles were about fires he had fought, or his climbing up the ranks.

I very much appreciate your input. It helped to answer my question.

Thanks again,
