That makes me VERY happy, this morning.
I going to start searching for Styrofoam to do some insulating.

(27,319 posts)I can get Styrofoam sheeting at Home Depot and they can be cut to size. NOBODY seems to have big Styrofoam coolers in store but I'm not giving up on my search. This isn't the only shelter I plan on making.

(93,085 posts)I checked at our only option in the county and I was taken aback by the cost! I need to line a dog carrier/kennel for Mikey.
I'm looking around for other options but time is getting short. I've asked a couple pals to let me know if they come across some scrap sheeting at construction sites. Looks like it will be hot here longer than in your area, gives me more time to plan and get it done.
I hope it is a better price there than it is around here.

(93,085 posts)Back to his demanding alpha self. Since he has always been a quasi-barn cat, we have negotiated an "outside" agreement. There's a ravine behind the housing here that is kind of wild but contains some hiking trails, he goes there to hang out. He has established his territory as the area that encompasses my little cardboard box and those in the little four-plex we're in. He's met all the immediate neighbors whose cats never come out.
He stays in at night, period. Too many owls, coyotes and cougars out back with few places to hide. He's been coming around to the idea of safety at night. He gets antsy when he has to use the litter box. Granted, when he goes out, he does his business out in the tall grass and comes back when he's done. He also comes when he's called.
He insists that I come and sit on the porch with him at some point every day that it's nice out and especially at sunset, as we did when we lived at the old place. Some of our old activities are coming back to him so that's good. He's less playful in the house but he's outside most of the day unless I go somewhere, then I put him in.
And I am thankful for the newer organic litter products available these days. I Like the corn cob/cedar stuff, great for a small place like mine.

(7,048 posts)I built an outdoor shelter once, and the cats chewed up the styrofoam, and probably ate some of it. One disappeared; never new why, but the styrofoam may have been a contributing factor.

(520 posts)But vet clinics get their vaccine and some lab stuff shipped in various sizes of styrofoam boxes and disposing of them is a PITA. If your clinic is a fairly big one, some of the boxes can be pretty big. I use one to hold my spaghetti pot, when I'm making beer. It holds enough grain for a partial mash at a high enough temp for long enough.
I can't image they wouldn't give them away to any client who wants them. They can't be recycled (at least where I live) and like I said - PITA (pain in the ass). Sometimes it's not a box, but small sheets in a cardboard box. Those might be able to be cobbled together.
The box I 'rescued' would fit one cat pretty comfortably.
