still have the toys, their leads. I losts one right after the other, only a few months between them. It was horrible with my Border Collie, hubby and me all but fighting about what the "best" thing to do would be. Finally, when he fell off the couch and couldn't get his legs under him, as well as soiling himself, that was it. I just told my husband to get his coat, we were going to the vet. Einstein was in pain and far past what his dignity should have allowed. I loved that dog with all my heart, but it just ripped to pieces each time I tried to see him carry on. I told DH that letting him go to sleep in our arms was the more empathic thing to do.
A few months later, my dog... a leonburgher... died on Christmas Day. He was in front of the tree when we came downstairs to open presents. To this day, I hate the coming of Xmas. Porter was a throw away dog... abused and thrown away. But he taught himself how to be a service dog to me. The fact he passed away sometime between Xmas Eve and Day, and I wasn't there with him has always torn my heart in two... and I'll readily admit, I'm much more a cat person!
