Here's a trivia question

Thought about this in a reply to another thread.

Neither Gingrich, Romney, nor Obama has ever served in the military. Assuming either Gingrich or Romney is the nominee, this election will feature no candidate at the top of a major party ticket who has served in the military. When was the last election where that was the case?

Here's a hint. Note that I said 'served in'

And no cheating of course!

I know Raygun made movies, I don't think he joined up. And I'm pretty sure Dukakis did not serve.

In 88 H-Dub was at the top of the ticket.

Walter Mondale served in the army during the Korean war, though he was stationed stateside.

I'm not trying to rehash the Bush guard story. Whatever exactly happened, he was in the national guard. But that doesn't matter anyway because Al Gore joined the army in Vietnam, in no small part hoping it would help his father's Senate re-election chances.
