(61,295 posts)Man Arrested After Heckling Prince Andrew During Queen Elizabeths Funeral Procession
Carlie Porterfield Forbes Staff
I cover breaking news.
Sep 12, 2022, 03:08pm EDT
TOPLINE A 22-year-old man was arrested in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Monday after shouting Andrew, youre a sick old man! at the late Queen Elizabeth IIs funeral procession, a reference to the accusations of sexual assault lobbed at the queens second son, Prince Andrew.
KEY FACTS
The cortege was making its way up the Royal Mile in Edinburgh from Hollyroodhouse, the British monarchys official Scottish palace, to St. Giles Cathedral for a memorial service.
Footage posted online shows a young man yelling at the procession before being detained by police as Prince Andrew and the queens three other childrenincluding the new King Charles IIIwalked behind their mothers coffin.

The man was arrested over a breach of the peace, Police Scotland told Sky News, becoming at least the fourth arrest made in the U.K. amid funeral events for the late queen, who died at her Scottish Highlands castle last week.
On Sunday, a 22-year-old womanwho was spotted holding an anti-monarchy protest sign outside St. Giles Cathedral during an accession proclamation for Charles in Edinburghwas charged with breaching the peace, police said.
A 74-year-old man was also arrested and charged with breaching the peace on Sunday near Holyroodhouse. A fourth person, who identified himself online as Symon Hill, was arrested in Oxford, England, during the local countys proclamation of the new king on suspicion of behavior that could cause harassment or distress, police told Buzzfeed News. (He was later released before being booked at the police station, and authorities are currently investigating, they said.)
Hill said on social media Sunday that he had only vocally objected to Charles becoming king, and that police told him he had been arrested under a new policing law that took effect in the U.K. earlier this year that allows law enforcement to put more restrictions on protests.

(7,839 posts)written, and have been effective. Hate speech is dangerous, recognizable, distinct from protected free speech
That a carve out for hate speech free speech can not be done without even greater danger from a suppressive state defining that law is a fiction clung to only by Americans and their holy cow attitude to a clause every other democratic nation with effective hate speech laws also has in their sacred constitutions.
The American manner of charging hate speakers with with an add on civil law violation to an already existant crime is weak tea.

(61,295 posts)peaceably assemble on a grassy knoll along the route of the motorcade. I wave a huge "Trump 2024" banner and shout "Let's go, Brandon" ( except it's not really "Let's go, Brandon" ) as the motorcade goes by. That's all we do, shout and wave banners. No one runs out into the street or throws something at the motorcade or brandishes a firearm.
In which city, county, or state in this country will I be charged with a crime, and what will be the crime with which I am charged?

Mon Oct 31, 2022, 09:05 AM: No crime committed!? Hate speech laws are very specific and ofc a judge has the final say.
You just finished saying yesterday that "America is incompetent in writing hate speech laws."
Sun Oct 30, 2022, 08:48 AM: Also protects hate speech. Why??? America is incompetent in writing hate speech laws
The courts will hold.
Copy Germanys or Canada laws if cant muster the courage. Or suffer the consequences.
Which is it? Either we're incompetent at writing them, or "{i}t works." Please choose the answer you prefer today and cite that one. Thank you.

(12,930 posts)'harm to others' doesn't it?
So - any discussion of abortion is clearly off the table. Conversion therapy for transgenders - out. CRTheory - doesn't work for white people. Climate change - can't do that with goring a few oxen. "Divest" (from XYZ)? - why certainly not!
And of course the shelves and shelves of literature - full of harmful notions and ideas - starting with fad diets, and moving on up to all patriarchal religion (or heck, just any religion at all). Doling out 'harm' for years ...
As W. would have said (if he was truly sentient) - it really does come down to "Who is the decider?"
