Gun Control & RKBA

Chicago police Superintendent David Brown late Wednesday issued an angry statement against a federal judges decision to release the man accused of making a straw purchase of the gun used to kill Chicago police Officer Ella French.
Jamel Danzy, who faces federal charges of conspiring to violate firearms laws, was granted a $4,500 appearance bond pending trial, meaning he will not need to pay bail to get out of custody. At a brief hearing conducted by telephone, U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert on Wednesday noted Danzys steady employment history and lack of criminal background.
Brown was not impressed with the choice, issuing a statement to the media.
To say that I am extremely disappointed in U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffery Gilberts decision to release Jamel Danzy on an unsecured bond today is an understatement, Brown said. It is an outrage.

Making a straw purchase has a potential sentence of 10 year at the Federal level. The reality is it is not treated like a serious crime. It is possible that the person who knowingly provided a felon the gun he used to kill a cop could get probation if he pleads guilty.
It has little to do with "loose" state laws. This is a Federal enforcement issue that needs to change.

(3,297 posts)And I hope they throw the book at this SOB, every straw buyer, every Ghost Gun maker and anyone who doesn't demonstrate safe storage and handling.
I like guns, I like to be prepared for self defense, I enjoy shooting targets. And I hope they make it a FULL 10 years, in the nastiest hell-hole, not one day off for good behavior even if he raises the dead, and we can make any violation like this a life without possibility of parole sentence and I am OK with it.

(519 posts)Supplying a firearm to someone who could not obtain one otherwise is a crime. This crime should never be plea-bargained away or reduced to a lesser charge as part of a deal. These criminals are a big part of why those of us who do obey the law are being targeted by the ant-gunners. There is no legitimate reason to provide firearms to criminals.

(18,593 posts)I urge everyone who reads this to campaign against prosecutors who plea bargain such charges. Laws mean nothing without follow through from a prosecutor.

(34,204 posts)It's not the case with every crime that a criminal provides a state id with an address and signs a form providing evidence of one's culpability.
I don't know why these aren't prosecuted more.

(589 posts)Straw purchases should be prosecuted and judged harshly.
Traffic of guns to felons always works against us good guys in the long run.
