From the ones who brought you a good guy with a gun: a new meme straight out of the NRA and

the NSSF. It seems to me that it has to have a single source because it has shown up in so many different places.

In this video with John Stewart it show up at the 40 second mark:

It seems to be a derivative of the red herring meme; it's all good because look over there! It's the drugs, it's the fatherlessness, it's the whatever and this isn't a big problem at all!

This derivative is "we're all really very safe because if you look at the numbers there are so few gun deaths compared to the number of people that it'll never happen to me or you."

I first noticed this about a year ago but only recently put it together as an organized meme. In a recent thread about gun violence I had two different DUers use it to justify ignoring the increases in gun violence and mass shootings. The give away is the almost exact wording of the argument as too small to pay attention too and the deflection to other dangers like dying in your kitchen (yeah, that really came up) or drugs and obesity.

So, if you hear this justification for doing nothing (even when it's thinly veiled with 'I didn't say we shouldn't do something but . . .) know you are talking to someone from the gun rights side who has bought into the whole guns is good and not the problem dogma.

Not as bad as it once was tho. 'Bout two years ago I went through my ignore list and found that almost all of them were posting privileges revoked or under review. The one or two left speak much more softly these days but still huggin their gunz.

Great interview. He did a good job of pointing out what the majority of gun owners want. Increased regulation.
And he made a great point about ATFs lack of resources to do their job.
