"...and all their songs are sad." Or maybe not.

You know that G.K. Chesterton quote:

For the great Gaels of Ireland
Are the men that God made mad,
For all their wars are merry,
And all their songs are sad.

And you know what that means: It's time for another music thread. Post a song that either proves or disproves Chesterton's claim.

First up: Mary Black and Eleanor McEvoy, "Only a Woman's Heart."

I love "Whiskey in the Jar"!

That said, it is a song about an outlaw (SPOILER ALERT) whose girl betrays him. Lively but darker than it seems at first blush.

First, an Irish love song, "The Star of the County Down."

"The Canticle of the Turning." The melody is "The Star of the County Down" and the lyrics are by Rory Cooney. It's a rallying cry for social justice.

Canadian Loreena McKennitt performing the same song as above. It's a nice reading.

At YouTube I have an entire playlist devoted to Irish music, including multiple versions of "Finnegan's Wake" I never tire of hearing.

Thanks for posting.

I found a copy of the book "Finnegan's Wake". For quite awhile much of my reading has been a repeat visit to my favorites.

She says that singing doleful Irish songs all the time almost drove her into therapy. She then went on a quest for a happy Irish song. The link below is one of the sad songs and is evocative of the sense of loss experienced by generations of the Irish Diaspora.

From a live performance, "You and I in the One Bed Lie." The studio version is also available on her self-titled album.

Believe me, it'll set your toes tapping.
