Road rage finally puts alleged 'Goodfellas' mobster, 82, behind bars

Prosecutors allege that Vincent Asaro, 82, was inducted into the Bonanno crime syndicate more than 40 years ago and has held the position of captain and been a member of the family’s ruling panel.

He was charged – and acquitted two years ago – over the infamous 1978 Lufthansa heist, which was immortalised in the Martin Scorsese gangster classic Goodfellas. He was also acquitted of the murder by strangulation of a suspected informant in 1969.

On Thursday, however, Asaro was sentenced to eight years in prison for his part in a road rage incident in the mob stronghold of Howard Beach, Queens.

Bridget Rohde, acting US attorney for the eastern district of New York, said the heavy sentence held Asaro “accountable not only for using his power as a member of organized crime to address a perceived slight by another motorist, but for a lifetime of violent criminal activity”.

1. while I am glad he is getting it

the problem I see is that he was ONLY convicted on the road rage, the other factors shouldn't have entered in to because technically he has NO criminal history

2. I agree. Has US Attorney Rohde said too much?

Couldn't Asaro's attorneys have reason to appeal the sentence? and Rohde makes the case for them... ?

3. yup, you can't sentence for crimes that weren't comitted

according to the law (just like Simpson) he never criminally murdered Nicole and this guy never legally heisted Lufthansa (he was found not guilty of that charge)

4. One day I was taking a work van to another site of ours. I'm in traffic and hear someone honking,

really laying o the horn! I'm slowing down, looking to see who it might be, checking to make sure I have no doors ajar, no way I left anything on the roof or anything like that. His distracting me like that only made me slow down and probably antagonized him even more!

A break in the traffic opens up beside me and here he comes, changing lanes and standing on it. He pulls up beside me and aside from the hat. it's Mr Freakin' McGoo! Thick glasses, leaning forward, laying on the wheel practically, on fire with rage blasting the horn! He was wearing these really thick glasses and driving a big old boat like and old Lincoln Continental. I let up on the gas again and let him by, mainly because I was laughing so hard!

Another time, I would have pulled up and kept formation with the rig in front of him to keep him blocked. You have to think about that kind of thing though these days. More crazies with guns. You might get shot at.

5. This reminds me of OJ Simpson and Al Capone

getting nailed for their "lesser" crimes. Sometimes Karma is late but it has a way of catching up.
