(20,176 posts)I was nearby so I went to the police-action at OccupyDC at McPherson Sq. to cover it for possible freelance work, but thus far nobody buying. Not surprised, the media still seems to not want to touch actual Occupy journalism...only staged raids by police and standoffs.

(154,021 posts)Last Tuesday the media present at the day of action was me... East county magazine, and the local fox affiliate. I think the ut was there.
But try to find your mostly online alternate media.

If you happen to ask the right person and get the quote about them working out of shacks for 2 years...
There are surely worse ways to waste your ink/contribute to your carpal tunnel...

(1,569 posts)I'm the acquisitions editor for a medium-sized non-fiction publisher and it isn't just that excited authors are so much easier to work with, but almost always their enthusiasm comes through even in topics that are quite dry on the surface.
I always remind myself that there is hardly any topic that isn't important and even exciting to at least a few people.

(45,558 posts)I had the pleasure of writing a political column for a bi-weekly magazine here in Cleveland.
I also wrote financial redevelopment columns as well as writing about various ethnic communities in the City and how they worked to preserve their history.
All told I made over 50k writing during the time from 1993 to 1999.
It was fun, I was nomniated for a couple of my columns but never got passed the nomination stage.
I made three promises to myself, The first was to make money for writing, next was to make money, run for office and make a difference in politics and finally, to make money playing my guitar.
Did all three although I hope I can get back with the writing and the music stuff as my professional life kind of ebbs away....

(45,558 posts)I wrote and developed ideas as an associate editor for 4 years.
I did some reviews, wrote about development issues and how the various commuity action groups in the city were advancing the standard of living in the city.
A lot of fun, deadlines were always a motivator.
