Has anyone here ever used the book options of Word to write a book or story,

and then did their own binding? i.e. Kettle stich binding or other technique?

3. I do lots of books for clients, and my own, in Word

And I do the book layout using the Page Layout tab. There are also templates available online.

I don't do the binding. I let KDP Print and IngramSpark take care of that.

If you never want it available to the public, you might better off looking for a local print shop that will do the job for you. But you'll probably pay more that way. With KDP Print, there is no upfront charge, just the author's cost for the copy plust shipping and tax. With IngramSpark, there's also the $49 setup fee.

What I meant is that KDP Print and IngramSpark are designed for people who want to sell their books to the public -- on Amazon, B&N, etc., and in bookstores in the case of IngramSpark. If you don't want your book sold that way and you only want a copy for yourself, then it's probably simpler to approach a local printer to print one copy.

If you do want to sell your book to the public, then KDP Print or IngramSpark is the way to go.

10. I use Scrivener

It runs on Windows and Mac and only costs about $40. It can do miraculous things not only for formatting, but also organizing and planning your projects. I'm using it for a novel now and I can create a folder for every character, research, images, chapter; I can outline, create index cards on the corkboard, todo lists. It really keeps it together for you. Most helpful feature is being about to view two pages at a time while seeing the hierarchy of files at the same time. It is a masterful tool for writers, especially longer works. It's WAY cheaper and more efficient than Word.
