(14,465 posts)... even if I clean and lube the chain weekly, it's still a friggin' mess. It's amazing how much magnetic dirt is out there and attracted to my chain.

(14,779 posts)Last year I had to switch to my studded tires, the ice and snow was bad last year and in previous year, so far no need to change. I purchased by Studded tires over 10 years ago. They have lasted 10 years for most Years I do NOT need them, and in the years I need them, it is rare to go more then 3 months of bad weather (and long distance trips other then to home and work I tend to wait till it warms up and I switch back to regular tires). I purchased the tires from Peter White wheels, where I purchased the front axle Generator for my lights on my bicycle. For more details go to Peter White Wheels:http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/studdedtires.asp
I purchased the tire with the LEAST number of studs, the more stubs the greater roll resistance (and the harder it is to peddle). That is all you need on paved roads, if you go over dirt roads with a lot of ice and snow then you may want more studs, but I recommend the tire with the least studs and if that if not enough then get one with more studs (and most people will NOT have to upgrade).

I also tend to increase the lighting on my bike, do to the fact I tend to bike almost exclusively after night fall on the way home from work.
I also tend to store extra pair of Socks and Underwear at work, in case I get caught in bad weather and need a change.
Other then the above, nothing.
