that these birds nest on the ground and the chicks look a bit like cotton balls with wisps of brown on them. When left alone they cluster together with their little butts stuck together and beaks pointed out. A perfect circle. Should you stumble upon them they scatter to 360 degrees for about five feet then squat as close to the ground as they can get and become invisible. At this point you can literally pick one up if your eyesight is keen enough to find one and you're fairly quick.

The wonders of living with Mother Nature . . . or sometimes Nature's a Mutha . . .

If you get close to the nest the Mother will flap her wing as if injured to veer you from the nest. Hoping (you) the predator will eat her before the nest. Oh and the sound! I taught my children to watch their footsteps carefully when they heard a Momma scream.

Lovely photos. I think it must have been hard to get a close-up.
