What are some fun turn-based RPGs?

I have been in the mood for one, but I have not played very many.

I have played Final Fantasy Tactics, Gladius, and Valkyria Chronicles.

I don't care if it is fantasy, sci-fi, or whatever, but I would like one where I can chose how I level up my characters.

Heck, grab yourself a cheap PSP or Vita and you can play FF Tactics and Ogre Tactics. Evoman Jan 2013 #7
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll investigate them. nt ZombieHorde Jan 2013 #6

I loved the Persona games, they were good... I'd also suggest looking up any of the old Wizardry games.

There's lots of RPG elements, such as leveling up your characters, their equipment and base.

any Final Fantasy up to X-2, 5 and up offer customizable leveling. I'd avoid FFX because the voice acting was bad to the point of being distracting.

The first two Fallout games for the PC were extremely good as well.

Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 are the other two, with Final Fantasy 4 not too far behind. If you're talking about turn based strategy games like Tactics, I liked the first Vandal Hearts. Dragon Force was pretty good too.

It's a card game/builder game. Not really tactical but pretty close. You have many ways to level up your card characters - which you get by a somewhat roulette wheel thing.

This one is the closest I have seen to FFT in a free browser game.

These games aren't flashy or state of the art or anything. Pretty simple but stand out a bit from all the other millions that are cookie stamped.

Final Fantasy Tactics was one of my all time favourites, most played games. I have to get myself a reconditioned Playstation so I can revisit, as my old one has died a long time ago.
There was Tactics Ogre too - I lost that one but it too was the kind of tactic game I prefer.
Another was Shining Force - probably the first one out as this goes back years. I believe they have other sequels but none like the first, iirc.
Kingdom Hearts might be up your alley too. I played a demo of it on xBox a few weeks ago and my next purchase might be this one. (I may be wrong about this one, I went googling and didn't see what I recall the demo looked like).

this one looks about as close to FFT as anything I've seen. Not available yet but maybe worth watching for.
