During today's match at Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen striker Stefan Kießling put a header just outside the near post. The ball somehow snuck through the netting, and Kießling was awarded a goal.
The celebration was a bit subdued (nobody make eye contact with the officials!), but it wasn't particularly amusing for Hoffenheim. A late goal would make it 2-1, making Kießling's header through the onion bag the winner.

Some form of replay or goal line technology, and you wouldn't see things like this..

(6,261 posts)That's an utterly bizarre goal! I certainly can't blame the ref here. Even forewarned, I initially thought it was perfectly valid and the non-goal would be coming later in the segment.

(9,709 posts)though I would think the keeper would be more aware. The only one who seems to know what happened was Kiessling, who immediately put his hands to his head knowing his header was going wide. Very odd.

(488 posts)that the Bundesliga will eventually reverse this goal and give a point to Hoffenheim. It totally looks like a good goal at first, but it just wasn't. Kießling is a fine striker, he should be more than able to collect a replacement for this goal as the season goes along.

For crying out loud, it's not like Kiessling made the "goal" call here. Even if he had, it's just a bloody game...

(961 posts)Goal line tech is the answer. Where the EPL leads others will eventually follow.
