Volunteer in Iceland

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but given that Iceland comes up in various discussions, I thought some DU members might be interested. 2. Some look llike fun, but...

paying for my own airfare, food, living in a sleeping bag (my own) and paying 200 Euros to harvest some guy's berries isn't exactly what I had in mind as volunteer work.

5. Yeah, I did notice that upon closer inspection

Food and lodging are supposed to be included, and airfare makes sense, but the 200 Euro seems a little odd. The price varies by location -- it's even 0 in some other countries -- but the Iceland gigs all seem to float around 200. Still, one of my friends has done several "agricultural vacations" (ie, paying someone to work their farm), and they've always had a cost.

But if you're hoping for a cheap trip to Iceland, just do what I did years ago and book a trip after a major volcanic eruption.

But seriously, if you don't mind the cold and near-permanent darkness, the prices in winter are really good. (And the country is truly beautiful in wintertime.) I'm lucky enough to be on the Icelandair route, and throughout the year they have some great sales. If you're comfortable with Couchsurfing.com, you can visit there pretty reasonably. Even airbnb.com has some affordable places -- and of course some really crazy expensive places.

Travel to Iceland is a little bit iffy right now, but it is definitely on my list of places I want to visit

I've been there 3 times now -- twice in winter, once in spring. I'd like to see it in summer or early fall, but maybe next year. There's a road that goes around the island, and I've been told that it's a great adventure to drive from town to town along that road.

8. I've also heard that about the self-drive trips.

I think you can get a car relatively inexpensively there as well.
